Croatia’s Gaming Industry Defies Global Slowdown

While the global gaming industry faced some stagnation last year, Croatia’s gaming sector has thrived, reporting impressive revenues of nearly €60 million

As anticipation builds for Zagreb’s Reboot InfoGamer Expo, the local association of Croatian gaming studios has revealed insights into the industry’s workforce and key trends driving the domestic video game development market.

Croatian games are making a significant splash on the international stage, particularly on Steam, where Croatian titles are three times more likely to be played than those from other countries. Even more telling, 68% of Croatian game developers are now harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) in the development process, a sign of the increasing reliance on technology to streamline production, enhance creativity, and optimize game design.

The spotlight on Croatia’s gaming prowess extends to the popular streaming platform, Twitch, where several Croatian games have amassed remarkable viewership numbers. According to data from Twitch Tracker, the most-watched Croatian game of all time is SCUM, with an impressive 217,872 peak concurrent viewers. Following closely are Talos Principle (140,563 viewers) and Serious Sam 3 (101,110 viewers), further cementing Croatia’s place in the global gaming landscape.

Notably, a newcomer, Return to Moria, has already surged to the fourth spot with 98,713 peak viewers, while other Croatian titles like Escape Simulator, Serious Sam 4, and RAID: World War 2 make up the Top 10. The rapid ascent of these games highlights Croatia’s growing influence in global gaming, not just as a producer but as a creator of cultural phenomena in the streaming world.

As Croatian developers continue to leverage cutting-edge technology like AI, their presence on the global stage is poised to grow even further, making Croatia a key player in the future of game development.
