Preparatory works are scheduled to start on Tuesday, 21 April, marking the first phase of a project that will connect Kamenička Street near the Faculty of Economics with Boulevard of Despot Stefan. The tunnel, planned to stretch for two kilometres, is expected to become a key traffic artery, aimed at easing congestion in central urban zones.
In this initial phase, works will cover Jovana Avakumovića Street, specifically a 110-metre section. Additional construction will take place along the Boulevard of Despot Stefan, between Dragoslava Srejovića and Kralja Dragutina streets.
As a result, Jovana Avakumovića Street will be halfway closed to traffic, while the remaining lane will be reserved for public transport, with changes expected on bus lines 33, 48, 58 and 96.
While the project is expected to significantly improve long-term traffic flow, it will also reshape parts of the surrounding urban space. The Luka Ćelović Park in front of the Faculty of Economics is set to be reduced and divided into two separate areas. Pedestrian access through the tunnel itself is not planned, though public transport routes are expected to pass through it. The overall value of the project is estimated at €220 million, underlining its scale and strategic importance for the Serbian capital.
