Questions Of Smoking Ban and Seasonal Jobs Returned to NSRS

Republika Srpska assembly to reconsider controversial legislation

Three laws recently adopted by the National Assembly of Republika Srpska have been returned for re-procedure by Acting President Ana Trišić Babić. Among them are the law on the protection of the population from tobacco products, amendments to the Criminal Code, and regulations on seasonal and temporary jobs.

The smoking ban law, which would prohibit indoor smoking and impose fines of 1,000 to 2,000 KM for violations, was set to take effect in a year.

The seasonal jobs law sparked public criticism for limiting tax-free agricultural work to close family members, requiring registration and contributions for extended family and neighbors who assist with farm work. Amendments to the Criminal Code allow courts to replace prison sentences of up to one year with fines or community service, taking into account the convicted person’s attitude and willingness to compensate for damages.

The National Assembly confirmed that the laws will be reconsidered at one of its upcoming sessions, with official reasoning to be presented when the laws are reintroduced.
