Von der Leyen: EU Stands With Venezuelans Amid Political Crisis

European Commission supports democratic transition despite Maduro’s controversial rule

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed that the EU stands with the people of Venezuela and supports a peaceful democratic transition. She emphasized the need for respect of elections, human rights and the rule of law, while working with international partners to promote dialogue and inclusive governance.

Venezuela has been led by Nicolás Maduro since 2013, following Hugo Chávez’s death. His government has faced international criticism for political repression, electoral manipulation, and human rights abuses.

Nicolás Maduro has been captured by U.S. forces and flown to New York, where he is being held in federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn to face charges including narco‑terrorism and drug trafficking.

Von der Leyen stressed that EU support focuses on Venezuelans and democratic institutions rather than legitimizing any individual leader. They continue to push for conditions that would allow fair elections and accountable governance, highlighting its backing for the country’s democratic future despite Maduro’s entrenched rule.
