New Diesel Train Brings Northern Croatia Closer to Zagreb

A huge step in connecting different parts of the country.

Northern Croatia’s rail network took a major step forward this week with the launch of a new diesel multiple unit on the Varaždin–Čakovec regional line, which will also provide a direct morning connection to Zagreb. Built by KONČAR – Electric Vehicles, the modern low-floor train marks the ninth new addition to Croatian Railways Passenger Transport’s (HŽPP) fleet this year, bringing the total to 70 new-generation trains now operating across the country.

The project represents the completion of a €360 million investment cycle, according to State Secretary Žarko Tušek, who noted that 19 additional hybrid and battery-powered trains are already on order.

HŽPP CEO Željko Ukić highlighted that over 1.3 million passengers travelled last year in Varaždin and Međimurje Counties, emphasizing how the new train and charging infrastructure in Varaždin will improve convenience and connectivity for local communities.

The new KONČAR-built series 7023 train offers modern comfort and efficiency, featuring Wi-Fi, air conditioning, wheelchair access, and space for bicycles. With speeds up to 120 km/h and capacity for over 340 passengers, it underlines Croatia’s growing commitment to sustainable, high-quality regional transport. Local officials praised the initiative as a vital step toward faster routes and a future where travel from Čakovec to Zagreb could take as little as one hour.
