New Rijeka Gateway Terminal Officially Opens

The €380 million facility positions Rijeka as a key logistics hub connecting the Mediterranean with continental Europe.

Croatia has officially inaugurated the new Rijeka Gateway container terminal, marking a major milestone in the country’s transport and maritime infrastructure. Described as one of the most technologically advanced terminals in Europe, the €380 million project has been fully operational since early September.

The opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, members of the Croatian government, and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Plenković emphasized the project’s strategic timing, coinciding with Croatia’s leadership of two regional initiatives — the Three Seas Initiative and the EU-MED 9 — aimed at enhancing connectivity between the Mediterranean and continental Europe.

Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Butković highlighted the transformative impact on Rijeka, noting that the project integrates sea, road, and rail into a single logistics system and places the city among major northern Adriatic ports. The terminal recently welcomed its largest ship to date, the Alva Maersk, capable of carrying nearly 16,600 containers.

The Rijeka Gateway project is expected to strengthen Croatia’s role in international trade, establishing Rijeka as a vital entry point for Europe’s Mediterranean and continental corridors.
