The Port of Koper welcomed a futuristic visitor last week — BYD Shenzhen, one of the world’s largest and most sustainable car transport vessels.
Stretching 219 metres and capable of carrying up to 9,200 vehicles, this maritime giant represents a breakthrough in low-emission shipping.
Launched in January 2025, the vessel is among the first to combine liquefied natural gas (LNG) with a hybrid battery system, slashing CO₂ emissions by up to 25% and virtually eliminating sulphur oxide and particle pollution.
The result? A quieter, cleaner ship with minimal environmental impact, especially welcome in sensitive coastal zones.
Representatives from BYD and the Port of Koper met onboard, marking another step in BYD’s push into Europe.
With plans to use Koper as a key entry point for Chinese EVs, BYD is eyeing long-term cooperation — including services from local affiliate Avtoservis.
Meanwhile, Koper continues to grow. A €153 million expansion of its northern pier begins this week, reinforcing its status as the Adriatic’s top container hub.
