Makarska Revives Old Town Business

With a renewed push for growth, Makarska is transforming its historic old town, offering vital financial support to small businesses and artisans, ensuring its future thrives alongside its past

Makarska, a coastal gem in Croatia, is once again breathing life into its historic heart.

Through the “Lokale u Kale” programme, the city is providing much-needed financial backing to micro and small enterprises operating within the ancient streets of the old town.

Despite the seasonal lull during winter, with the iconic Kalalarga largely deserted, this initiative is set to invigorate the local economy year-round.

Grants, ranging from €2,000 to €10,000, support businesses in nine sectors, from traditional craftsmanship like shoemaking and tailoring to hospitality and meat processing.

This year, the city has allocated €160,000 to the scheme, with 75% already distributed, helping both returning and new entrepreneurs.

The scheme even covers additional costs, such as waste disposal and business space maintenance, offering a comprehensive support system.

Looking ahead, Makarska is set to increase its investment in 2025, reflecting a clear commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while nurturing modern-day enterprise.
