One of Slovenia’s greatest footballers, Zahovič has accepted an offer to work as a UEFA match observer, a role that will see him analyze games, provide technical reports, and contribute to selecting Player of the Match awards. The 55-year-old confirmed that the opportunity came following encouragement from UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, highlighting the influence of Slovenian leadership within European football.
Zahovič brings extensive experience to the role, having earned 80 caps and scored a record 35 goals for the national team, while also building a strong club career with sides such as Olympiacos F.C., Valencia CF, FC Porto, and S.L. Benfica.
He was also the first Slovenian to feature in the UEFA Champions League, where he scored 11 goals.
Beyond his playing career, Zahovič played a key role in Slovenia’s historic qualification for major tournaments in the early 2000s and later enjoyed success as sporting director of NK Maribor. His return to football in an analytical capacity marks a new chapter for one of the country’s most influential sporting figures.
