In a major push to modernise its infrastructure and reposition itself on the European event map, Zagreb has unveiled plans for a sleek new €51 million congress centre on the grounds of the city’s iconic Velesajam complex.
Mayor Tomislav Tomašević, announcing the project, hailed it as “the new heart of New Zagreb,” finally putting to rest a 27-year legal dispute over land ownership that had stalled development.
The centre, envisioned decades ago and first put to competition in 2005, is now one of the city’s top five investment priorities.
Designed to attract international congress tourism and serve as a hub for both public and private events, the futuristic facility will feature a 2,500-seat main hall, a 600-seat secondary auditorium, and six flexible 150-seat breakout rooms.
Advanced tech, green design, and a 600-space underground car park round out the offering.
With direct access to the motorway and airport, yet removed from downtown congestion, the centre’s location may finally give Zagreb the strategic edge it has long lacked in Europe’s event industry.
