Slovenian Railways Unveil New Stadler Trains

Slovenia’s rail revolution picks up speed as state-of-the-art diesel units promise comfort, accessibility, and future-ready flexibility

Slovenian Railways have rolled out the first of 20 sleek new Stadler FLIRT diesel trains, marking a major step in replacing the nation’s oldest, least comfortable rolling stock.

The €150 million fleet upgrade, part of a wider €500 million modernisation, promises a smoother ride on key non-electrified routes like those to Bohinj and Nova Gorica.

Unveiled with a maiden journey from Ljubljana to Grosuplje, the low-floor trains feature air-conditioned interiors, free Wi-Fi, charging sockets, and space for bikes—designed to make rail travel more appealing for all passengers.

Though capable of 160 km/h, the full potential awaits future infrastructure upgrades.

Crucially, these units are bimodal-ready, meaning they can be converted for both diesel and electric operations—future-proofing Slovenia’s network in a sustainable way.
