Slovenia and Italy Launch Cross-Border Slow Travel Rail Project

The new “Time for Train” initiative aims to connect culture, history and sustainable tourism through scenic railway journeys linking northern Italy and western Slovenia.

The T4T – Time for Train project brings together tourism organisations from Slovenia and Italy to promote slower and more sustainable travel while reviving interest in historic railway routes. The initiative connects destinations including Venice, Gorizia, Nova Gorica, the Vipava Valley and the Bohinj region, encouraging visitors to combine train travel with festivals, gastronomy, wine tourism and cultural heritage experiences.

Among the first travel packages are themed journeys focused on history, wine and performing arts. One route follows the “Through Layers of History” concept, linking the èStoria history festival in Gorizia with stories from the former war border between Italy and Slovenia, alongside a ride on the historic Bohinj Railway built in 1906 during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Another itinerary connects the wine regions of Veneto and Slovenia’s Vipava Valley through vineyard visits, tastings and culinary events.

A third package planned for June combines performances during the Venice Biennale with excursions into the Julian Alps and the Ad Fluvium Frigidum historical festival in Ajdovščina. Organisers also announced additional summer and autumn programmes, many of them tied to celebrations marking the 120th anniversary of the Bohinj Railway.
