Šibenik Commemorates Dražen Petrović On Anniversary Of The Legend’s Death

The Croatian city of Šibenik has once again paid tribute to Dražen Petrović, marking the anniversary of the death of one of the greatest basketball players in European history and one of Croatia’s most celebrated sporting figures.

Petrović, who was born in Šibenik, remains a symbol of Croatian basketball excellence more than three decades after his tragic death in a traffic accident in Germany on 7 June 1993. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers who helped open the door for European players in the NBA, Petrović enjoyed a distinguished career with clubs including KK Šibenka, Real Madrid Baloncesto and the New Jersey Nets.

Commemorative events in Šibenik brought together local officials, sports representatives, family members and admirers of the basketball legend, who gathered to honour his legacy and contribution to Croatian and international sport. Floral tributes were laid at monuments dedicated to Petrović, while speakers reflected on his enduring influence on generations of athletes across the region.

Dražen Petrović helped elevate Yugoslav and later Croatian basketball onto the global stage through his extraordinary talent, work ethic and competitive spirit. His achievements continue to inspire young players throughout Croatia and beyond, ensuring that his legacy remains an integral part of the country’s sporting identity.

This year’s commemoration served as a reminder not only of Petrović’s remarkable career but also of the lasting impact he has had on European basketball, where he remains one of the sport’s most revered figures.
