Dunedin Airport in New Zealand has implemented a three-minute time limit for hugs in its departure area, advising travellers to use the car park for more extended farewells.
Speaking to New Zealand’s RNZ, airport CEO Daniel de Bono described airports as “hotspots for emotions” and referenced a study suggesting that a 20-second hug is sufficient to trigger a surge of the “love hormone” oxytocin. He added that managing the flow of people efficiently allows more passengers and their loved ones to share meaningful goodbyes.
According to CNN, Dunedin Airport’s parking offers a free 15-minute stay for those dropping off passengers, with additional fees charged for longer durations.
