Zagreb Moves Forward with Ambitious Tram Network Expansion

Zagreb is embarking on an ambitious tram network expansion, marking the first major project of its kind in two decades

The City of Zagreb is advancing with a bold new era for its public transport network by launching a tender to select contractors for the Sarajevska cesta construction and reconstruction project. The ambitious plan involves building a 2.25-kilometre tram line from Avenija Dubrovnik to Ranžirni kolodvor, with four stops, a turning point, and a new ZET facility.

Future growth is also considered, with switches incorporated at the Vatikanska ulica intersection for potential expansion in that direction.

“This is the first expansion of the tram network in Zagreb in 20 years and heralds the beginning of another of our strategic projects,” said Mayor Tomislav Tomašević. “This important undertaking provides a new southern gateway to the city, linking the eastern part of Novi Zagreb to the tram network.”

Construction will coincide with the development of the new Sarajevska cesta road, which will feature two lanes and pedestrian-cyclist paths on either side. Work is set to begin at the end of summer, pending a successful selection process, with the project expected to last 12 months.

The total estimated cost of the project, including municipal infrastructure, is set at €25 million.

“In our ongoing efforts to enhance public transport, we’ve also launched the long-awaited reconstruction of the Mihaljevac tram turning point and a new bus terminal, which will be ready by year’s end,” Tomašević added. “With 60 new trams due, the first of which will be operating by spring, possibly earlier, we are focused on delivering better, higher-quality, and safer mobility in Zagreb.”
