The agreement was signed in Thessaloniki, with the initiative aimed at increasing the region’s access to alternative gas supplies and reducing dependence on a limited number of energy sources.
North Macedonia’s participation will connect its gas system more closely with neighbouring countries and the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, as well as with Greece’s wider gas infrastructure. This is expected to give the country greater flexibility in sourcing natural gas and improve the security of supply.
The Vertical Gas Corridor brings together Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and Moldova, with North Macedonia now becoming an additional participant. The project is considered strategically important for the diversification of energy routes in Southeast Europe.
For North Macedonia, joining the corridor represents a step toward greater energy security and regional integration, while also creating opportunities to access gas from global markets through Greece’s LNG infrastructure.
