NATO Chief Mark Rutte Visits Croatia

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made a working visit to Zagreb, where he met Croatian leaders including Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Defence Minister Ivan Anušić to discuss defence cooperation and support for Ukraine.

Rutte toured a military base showcasing Croatia’s modern equipment such as Rafale jets, Black Hawk helicopters, and Bayraktar drones, and commended Croatia’s rapid defence modernization and strong contribution to NATO missions.

Plenković highlighted Croatia’s fulfilment of NATO commitments, noting defence spending exceeded 2 % of GDP and reaffirming Croatia’s robust support for Ukraine with over 15 aid packages delivered so far.

Both leaders stressed the importance of collective security and dialogue among allies, while reaffirming Croatia’s continued political, humanitarian, and military assistance to Ukraine — though no Croatian troops will be sent to fight on Ukrainian soil.

Rutte also underscored that Russia remains the principal threat to Euro-Atlantic security and welcomed Croatia’s role in regional stability. He noted broader strategic challenges discussed during the visit, including strengthening defence on NATO’s eastern flank and addressing Arctic security issues.
