Albania’s PM Promises €700 Minimum Wage by 2029

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has pledged to raise the country’s minimum wage to €700 by 2029, positioning it among the highest in the Western Balkans.

Starting January 2026, the minimum wage will increase to €500, directly benefiting more than 307,000 workers. Edi Rama framed the plan as part of a broader effort to improve living standards and prepare Albania for European Union membership by 2030.

The government’s new 2026 draft budget also prioritizes pensioners, with €16.5 million set aside for indexation and an additional €100 million to strengthen their income. By 2029, total pension support is projected to quadruple, reaching €400 million annually.

Rama called the initiative “a serious investment in our people” and a key promise of his fourth consecutive mandate.

The policy underlines Albania’s focus on social welfare and economic convergence with EU member states. Experts note that while the plan could drive consumer confidence and social stability, it also depends on maintaining steady growth and fiscal discipline. Within the Adriatic region, Albania’s pledge stands out as one of the boldest economic commitments tied to EU aspirations.
