Croatia Invests in Hybrid Trains to Bridge Rail Gaps and Cut Emissions

With 60% of its railways still unelectrified, Croatia’s €117.9M fleet of hybrid and battery trains aims to reconnect regions and future-proof public transport

Croatia has signed a €117.9 million deal to purchase 13 hybrid and battery-powered trains, marking a major leap in modernising its outdated rail system.

Financed by the European Investment Bank, the project includes five electro-diesel, four electro-battery, and four fully battery-powered units—set to replace trains nearly half a century old.

With more than 60% of the national network lacking electrification, these adaptable trains promise improved connectivity for remote and coastal towns like Pula, Rijeka and Zadar.

Manufactured by KONČAR, the trains will be fully accessible, fitted with bike spaces, Wi-Fi, infotainment, and run up to 160 km/h.

Two new charging stations will also be built in Lupoglav and Velika.

Deliveries are scheduled for 2027–2028, as part of Croatia’s broader €6 billion rail overhaul stretching to 2035.
