Hybrid Trains to Boost Split-Zagreb Connectivity

HŽ Passenger Transport and KONČAR – Electric Vehicles have signed a contract to procure six new electro-diesel hybrid trains, set to enhance the Split-Zagreb route

These state-of-the-art trains will replace the aging tilting trains that have served the route since 2004.

These innovative hybrid trains will utilize overhead electric lines on electrified tracks and switch to diesel engines on non-electrified segments, ensuring seamless travel across the 429-kilometre route.

The trains are designed to handle the demanding mountainous terrain with high-powered traction motors, achieving speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour. The new fleet will also increase daily departures, improving both local and regional mobility for citizens.

The €57.3 million contract, funded by a European Investment Bank (EIB) loan, marks a significant step in the “Revitalisation of the Croatian Railway System” project

The agreement not only covers the acquisition of these advanced trains but also includes the construction of the Zagreb Technical and Logistics Centre, and the renovation and construction of local and regional tracks, stations, and stops. The first-class and second-class coaches will accommodate 150 passengers, promising a comfortable and efficient travel experience.

This development represents a major investment in Croatia’s railway infrastructure, aimed at enhancing connectivity and modernizing transport services between Split and Zagreb.
