Slavic Soundwalking App Offers New Regional Literary Adventure

Writers and actors from across the region have come together for a new literary adventure with the launch of Slavic Soundwalking, a mobile application that blends South Slavic literature with city exploration

This innovative app allows users to engage with contemporary literary works while walking through the cities of Belgrade, Zagreb, and Ljubljana.

At dozens of urban locations, users can access audio stories by modern authors from Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. The goal of the app, as stated by Hartefakt, is to preserve South Slavic languages, promote regional literature, and enhance users’ listening skills and literary literacy.

The app features unpublished short stories by contemporary authors from the region, touching on modern and urban themes that reflect current society and times. These stories explore daily life, the challenges of contemporary societies, interpersonal relationships, cultural identity, urban legends, and other relevant topics for the urban population of South Slavic countries. Narrated by professional actors with musical and sound backgrounds, the stories are triggered as users walk through the public spaces of Belgrade, Zagreb, and Ljubljana.

Slavic Soundwalking invites users to step outside, put on their headphones, and embark on carefully curated routes. As they move through the city streets, the environment around them subtly transforms through the power of audio storytelling. Each location, while not directly connected to the stories, serves as a backdrop that enhances the listener’s imagination, making the narrative experience deeply personal and accessible to all. This innovative platform combines physical activity with cultural exploration, offering participants a dynamic way to connect with the spirit of South Slavic literary creativity.

The mobile app currently includes 75 short stories in Serbian, Croatian, Slovenian, and English, as well as sign language, making it accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing users. Additionally, the stories can be read and adapted for individuals with reading difficulties.

The app is exclusively available on smart mobile devices and is activated using GPS services.
