Slovenian Students Win Global Aircraft Design Competition

A team from the University of Ljubljana has taken first place among 98 international teams at one of the world’s most demanding student aviation contests.

Competing at the Design/Build/Fly competition, organised by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Kansas, the Slovenian team developed a radio-controlled aircraft from concept to final execution. This year’s challenge required participants to design a bush plane capable of towing a deployable banner while also carrying cargo, testing both engineering precision and operational reliability.

More than 30 students collaborated on the project, working through months of design, modelling, construction and testing. One of the key challenges was ensuring the aircraft remained stable and functional under demanding conditions, while also being compact enough for transport.

The team’s aircraft, named “Brvinc” after a dialect word for ant, reflects both resilience and strength, mirroring its ability to carry loads far beyond its size.

According to team leader Jakob Erhartič, the result was the outcome of strong coordination and sustained effort. The victory underscores the growing competitiveness of regional engineering talent on the global stage, particularly in fields requiring a blend of innovation, teamwork and technical expertise.
