Slovenia Develops First Biodegradable Dog Chew Toy

The innovation combines sustainability and pet care, turning industry by-products into an eco-friendly alternative to plastic toys.

Slovenian research and industry partnership has developed what it describes as the country’s first biodegradable chew toy for dogs, transforming food industry by-products into a durable and compostable product. The toy, branded BioSTARCHew, is the result of a two-year project led by TECOS in collaboration with Mlin Katić and Tačka.

Made from plant-based biopolymers, starch and pea husk residues, the chew toy repurposes materials that would otherwise go to waste. Developers say it is safe for pets, free from artificial additives, and designed to keep dogs engaged by allowing treats to be inserted.

Under industrial composting conditions, the material can break down by around 90% within four months without harming the environment.

The project highlights Slovenia’s push toward circular economy solutions, linking agricultural by-products with high-value consumer goods. Backed by around €640,000 in funding, including support from national and EU sources, BioSTARCHew is now moving toward commercialisation and is being positioned as a potential export product in the growing global market for sustainable pet care.
