Croatia Among World Leaders in Organ Transplantation

Croatia continues to rank among the world’s leading countries in organ donation and transplantation, with patients undergoing liver transplants at Zagreb’s University Hospital Centre (KBC Zagreb) recording a one-year survival rate of more than 95%

KBC Zagreb, also known as Rebro, operates Croatia’s largest transplant programme, performing procedures involving the liver, heart, kidneys and lungs. The hospital carries out approximately 40 liver transplants each year, while its multidisciplinary liver transplant team includes more than 60 people, with 15 medical professionals involved in the latest operation. The country performs strongly both in the number of donated organs and transplants carried out, as well as in patient outcomes.

Croatia’s transplant system also benefits from its membership in Eurotransplant, an international network that facilitates the exchange and allocation of donor organs across participating countries according to medical urgency and clinical criteria.

Marking European Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation Day, observed on the second Saturday of October each year, showed that a transplantation would not be possible without donors and the consent of their families. The occasion raises awareness of organ donation, recognises the generosity of donors and their loved ones, and highlights the work of medical teams who provide life-saving treatment to patients with serious organ failure.
