The MED9 summit is happening in Split on 6 and 7 October, bringing together leaders of nine southern European EU member states as well as senior EU and international officials.
The MED9 group comprises Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa and European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica are also expected to attend, alongside Monaco’s Prince Albert II and Jordan’s Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II. Discussions will focus on the priorities of Croatia’s MED9 presidency: building a safer, more sustainable and more resilient Mediterranean.
The agenda includes security and migration, energy, environmental protection and water management, demographic challenges, agriculture, justice, artificial intelligence and internal affairs, as well as relations with the EU’s southern neighbourhood and implementation of the Pact for the Mediterranean.
The summit will also provide an opportunity for the nine countries to coordinate positions ahead of the upcoming European Council meeting, with broader EU issues including the next multiannual financial framework, enlargement, competitiveness, defence and the situation in Ukraine expected to feature in discussions. The programme on 7 October will include two working sessions and a working lunch focused on the Mediterranean’s resilience, sustainable development and the geopolitical and geo-economic outlook in the Middle East, followed by a joint press conference.
