Serbian swimmer Andrej Barna has won the silver medal in the 50-metre freestyle at the European Championships in Paris, producing one of the strongest results of his career.
Andrej Barna shared second place with Russian swimmer Yegor Kornev, who finished with exactly the same time. Ukraine’s Nikita Sheremet claimed the European title in 21.13 seconds, leaving Barna just 0.24 seconds behind the champion.
The medal adds another major European achievement to Barna’s career. At the 2024 European Championships in Belgrade, he won bronze in the 100m freestyle, meaning he now has European medals in both sprint freestyle disciplines.
Barna, one of Serbia’s most successful swimmers in recent years, has established himself as a specialist in the fastest freestyle events. His strength has particularly been evident in the 50m and 100m freestyle, where the margins between medals are often measured in hundredths of a second. The new national record makes this silver even more significant, as Barna combined a major championship medal with the fastest 50m freestyle performance ever recorded by a Serbian swimmer. His result is another boost for Serbian swimming on the European stage.
