Croatia Launches €248 Million A1 Motorway Expansion Project

The upgrade will add a third lane between Zagreb and Karlovac to ease congestion on one of the country’s busiest road corridors.

Hrvatske autoceste has launched the preliminary procurement process for the reconstruction and expansion of the A1 motorway between Zagreb and Karlovac, paving the way for a €248 million infrastructure project. The planned upgrade will add a third lane in both directions along the 39-kilometre section, one of Croatia’s busiest motorway corridors, particularly during the summer tourist season.

The project also includes the construction of three new interchanges at Stupnik, Ašpergeri and Selce near Karlovac, the reconstruction of the Jastrebarsko interchange, and the replacement of several overpasses crossing the motorway.

Once the consultation process is completed, a formal public tender for the works will be launched.

Expanding the Zagreb–Karlovac section is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, enhance road safety and strengthen local connectivity. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with temporary traffic management measures to be introduced while works are underway.
