The St. Nicholas Choir of Litija, under the direction of Helena Fojkar Zupančič, has taken the top honour at the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing, widely considered the pinnacle of global choral competition. Held in Maribor, the final brought together elite ensembles from Europe, the United States and Asia, underscoring the global reach of the contest.
Rather than being a routine victory, the result signals a continuation of Slovenia’s long-standing excellence in choral music.
The Litija-based ensemble stood out in a highly competitive field, adding its name to a short list of Slovenian winners that includes the Academic Choir Tone Tomšič and the Vocal Academy Ljubljana.
Beyond the result itself, the win reflects the depth of Slovenia’s choral ecosystem, where singing is not only a professional pursuit but a widespread cultural practice. With a strong base of amateur and professional ensembles, the country continues to punch above its weight on the international stage, turning tradition into consistent artistic success.
