Ursula von der Leyen: Serbia Among the Most Advanced Countries on the Path to EU Membership

The European Union places enlargement at the top of its agenda, and Serbia stands out as one of the most advanced nations on its journey towards membership. This statement came from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, following her meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade.

In these times of global turbulence, we must fortify the unity and security of our continent, and enlargement serves as a means to achieve this. We want Serbia to join our Union. This offer is built upon trust, reciprocity, and partnership. It promises peace and prosperity, and it is a unique opportunity at this moment, unparalleled by any other. I genuinely hope, and am convinced, that you will seize this moment,” said von der Leyen at a joint press conference with Vučić.

In her view, Serbia is already among the most advanced countries on the path to EU membership, thanks to its commendable progress in the past.

“However, we urge you to continue taking steps, aligning with us, including in foreign policy. The EU wishes to rely on Serbia as a dependable European partner that upholds our shared principles and values,” the EC President further elaborated, explaining how the accession process typically works in practice:

“Accession is a merit-based process. Some countries progress rapidly, while others move at a slower pace. We believe it’s only fair that this process is merit-driven. The EU needs to prepare for enlargement, and candidate countries must be equally prepared to join.”
