EBRD Grants Serbia €50m Loan

Serbia Secures €50m EBRD Loan to Cut Air Pollution and Embrace Green Heating

In a significant stride towards environmental reform, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a €50 million loan to Serbia aimed at tackling one of the country’s most pressing issues—air pollution.

The funds will help phase out polluting heating plants in six municipalities and support a nationwide shift to sustainable heating systems.

Channelled through Serbia’s Ministry of Finance and distributed via the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the investment targets the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and the country’s reliance on imported energy.

Public institutions will be the primary beneficiaries, as the funds will enable cleaner district heating connections and greener infrastructure.

As Serbia wrestles with some of Europe’s dirtiest air, this initiative represents a critical step toward decarbonising its urban centres and aligning its environmental policies with EU standards.
