Major Railway Overhaul in Istria

A €55 million investment marks the beginning of the largest railway renovation project in Istria, set to significantly upgrade a key 50-kilometre stretch over the next three years

In a significant development for Croatia’s transport infrastructure, work is set to begin next month on the largest railway renovation project in Istria’s history.

A 50-kilometre stretch of the Buzet–Sveti Petar u Šumi line will be fully upgraded, with a €55 million investment from HŽ Infrastruktura and Strabag, the project’s lead contractor.

Over the next three years, the track will undergo a complete overhaul, including new rails, sleepers, and control systems.

The works will also see the modernisation of 16 railway-road crossings, and a significant improvement in safety features across the region.

The project is part of Croatia’s broader investment into railway revitalisation, which is unlocking European Union funding opportunities.

Plans to electrify and upgrade the full Istrian stretch to Pula are also underway, with studies already completed for the Lupoglav-Raša segment.

Transport Minister Oleg Butković underscored the importance of such investments, highlighting the €1.5 billion national railway upgrade, largely funded by EU grants and the European Investment Bank.
