New DME Systems to Enhance Navigation at Montenegrin Airports

A crucial upgrade to air traffic control as SMATSA installs advanced DME devices at airports in Tivat and Podgorica

In a significant leap for aviation safety and efficiency, the installation of new Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) devices has commenced at the Montenegrin airports of Tivat and Podgorica.

The state-of-the-art technology, manufactured by European firm Thales, will allow pilots to accurately gauge their aircraft’s distance from the ground-based units, enhancing precision during approaches.

The DME systems, which are standard at major airports across Europe, will replace older equipment dating back to 2010, marking a milestone for Montenegro’s air traffic control capabilities.

SMATSA, Serbia and Montenegro’s air traffic control agency, is overseeing the installation, with the project scheduled for completion by March 15.

A Commissioning Flight Check, using a specialized calibration aircraft, will validate the systems before they are fully operational.

The €500,000 investment is part of SMATSA’s ongoing modernization efforts, ensuring safer, more reliable navigation for the growing number of flights to and from the region.
