Germany Joins Global Battery Alliance with Serbia and Zambia

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced that Germany will join the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) alongside Serbia and Zambia, signalling a significant step in the effort to ensure sustainable and ethical battery supply chains

The declaration was made during the inaugural Hamburg Sustainability Conference, where Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić was also in attendance. Vučić is set to address the panel on “Securing Globally Responsible and Circular Battery Supply Chains.”

The agreement underscores the shared commitment to advancing Rio Tinto’s Jadar lithium project, a key component of Serbia’s efforts to become a global player in the green energy transition

The partnership builds on the memorandum of understanding signed just months ago between Serbia, the European Commission, and Germany, which aims to establish a strategic partnership in the realms of sustainable raw materials, battery value chains, and electric vehicles.

Chancellor Scholz reiterated Germany’s dedication to sustainable practices within the GBA, emphasising the importance of reducing the environmental impact of battery production and supply chains as part of the broader push for responsible industrial growth.
