Belgrade Shortlisted to Host the International Economic Association’s World Congress

Belgrade has made it to the shortlist as a potential host city for the 21st World Congress of the International Economic Association (IEA), set to take place in June 2026

The Serbian Association of Economists officially submitted its bid in late May and is now a leading contender for this prestigious global event.

The bid’s strong potential was underscored by the recent visit of Omar Licandro, a member of the IEA Executive Committee, who spent two days in Belgrade evaluating the city’s capacity to host the congress.

“Hosting the IEA World Congress in Belgrade presents a remarkable opportunity for the Serbian Association of Economists and all participants to engage with the global economic community, inspire dynamic discussions, share innovative ideas, and forge new partnerships that will shape the future of economics and contribute to global prosperity,” said Aleksandar Vlahović, President of the Serbian Association of Economists.

Vlahović also highlighted that the bid has garnered comprehensive support from key institutions, the business sector, the academic community, and the Government of Serbia, ensuring a strong backing for Belgrade’s candidacy.
