European Parliament Backs Slovenian-Led Initiative on Safe Abortion

Non-binding resolution supports “My Voice, My Choice” campaign and calls for EU-level financial support mechanism

The European Parliament has endorsed a resolution expressing political support for the Slovenian-led My Voice, My Choice European Citizens’ Initiative, which aims to improve access to safe and legal abortion care across the European Union. While the resolution is not legally binding, it urges the European Commission to establish a voluntary financial mechanism allowing member states to support women who cannot access abortion services in their home countries due to legal, financial, or practical barriers.

Adopted at a plenary session in Strasbourg on December 17, the resolution passed with 358 votes in favour, 202 against and 79 abstentions.

MEPs warned that limited access to abortion in parts of Europe exposes women to health risks as well as financial and psychological pressure, and called on countries with restrictive laws or practices to bring their policies in line with international human rights standards.

The initiative, led by Slovenia’s Institute 8 March, has collected more than 1.2 million signatures across the EU. The European Commission has until early March 2026 to decide whether it will act on the proposal, with Equality Commissioner Hadja Lahbib stressing that any follow-up would respect EU treaties and national competences, as abortion policy remains the responsibility of individual member states.
