Edi Rama: “Migration Requires Smart Management”

In an interview with Berliner Zeitung, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama discussed the opening of a new asylum center in Albania, part of an agreement with Italy, and more

The interview, covered by Deutsche Welle, highlights Albania’s ongoing two-decade-long effort to join the European Union, a goal likely to be achieved in the next decade, according to the Berlin-based publication.

Rama reflects on Albania’s historical challenges and emphasizes its rapid economic progress in recent years. He points to the doubling of GDP, salary increases in the public sector, and improvements in infrastructure as signs of Albania’s advancement, especially in comparison to its neighbors.

Addressing relations with neighboring countries, particularly Serbia and Kosovo*, Rama emphasized the importance of maintaining good relationships. Drawing on wisdom from his grandmother, he said, “Happy neighbors, happy home,” underscoring his efforts to improve ties with Serbia

When asked about Montenegro’s optimism regarding its EU membership prospects, Rama acknowledged Montenegro’s enthusiasm but noted that Albania has shown the fastest progress in EU accession.
