On Christmas Eve, a beloved tradition will unfold across Croatia as 5,000 free servings of cod, a symbol of festive generosity, are served to locals and tourists in Split.
The event, organised by the city’s “Split with Love” initiative, continues its longstanding legacy, bringing together communities to celebrate the holiday season.
This year, the event will take place at the city’s Pazar market, where guests will enjoy a hearty serving of cod and fritulas, a popular sweet treat, alongside live music from the Brodosplit choir and the Providenca band.
The tradition began in 2005 and is supported by the city of Split, the Tourist Board of Split-Dalmatia County, and the Norwegian Embassy in Croatia.
The cod is cooked in a specially designed “mega pan” measuring 2.2 metres in diameter and prepared by members of the ŠKMER association and local school students who volunteer to help.
It’s a day that celebrates food and the spirit of community and shared heritage.
