The introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has significantly affected exports from Serbia to the European Union. According to industry representatives, exports in certain sectors have dropped by nearly 30% as companies face additional costs linked to carbon emissions.
The new system requires exporters to report and eventually pay for the carbon footprint of products entering the EU market.
This particularly affects energy-intensive industries such as steel, aluminum and cement production.
Business representatives warn that without modernization and investments in cleaner technologies, Serbian companies could face further losses in competitiveness on the European market.
