Slovenia’s Nika Prevc secured her first Olympic medal on 7 February, taking silver in a closely contested women’s ski jumping competition. Prevc, 20, dominated the trial round but trailed Norway’s Anna Stroem by a single point after the first jump. Despite a stronger final-round performance, Stroem held her nerve to win gold by just 1.1 points.
“I know I did not do everything I had planned for the day. But still, an Olympic medal is an Olympic medal,” Prevc said, reflecting on her performance.
Arriving at the Games as a two-time world champion and world record holder, Prevc had already claimed 13 World Cup victories this season, while Stroem had one.
Japan’s Nozomi Maruyama took bronze, finishing 5.5 points behind Prevc, while Slovenia’s other finalist, Nika Vodan, placed eighth. Slovenia’s head coach Jurij Tepeš highlighted the pressure of the occasion, noting that landings would be decisive and praising Prevc’s composure in her first Olympic Games. Prevc will have another chance to compete for gold in the large-hill event on 15 February.
