Mercator Secures Takeover of Rival Tuš in €30 Million Deal

Slovenia's largest retailer, Mercator, has signed a contract on 15th November to acquire its rival, Tuš. The deal's value, estimated at €30 million according to media reports, involves a 100% stake in Engrotuš, Tuš's retail and wholesale business.

The transaction is currently pending regulatory approval, and if cleared, Mercator and its Croatian owner, Fortenova, will collectively control approximately 35% of Slovenia’s retail market. Mercator already commands a 25% market share with around 460 stores, while Engrotuš holds 10% with roughly 260 stores.

Mercator’s purchase of Engrotuš marks a significant move in the Slovenian retail landscape, with Fortenova and Mercator outbidding the German retail giant, Rewe, for the acquisition.

Fabris Peruško, CEO of Fortenova, expressed their commitment to the Slovenian market and highlighted that this takeover aligns with their previous commitments when they absorbed Mercator in 2021. The deal signifies greater stability for employees and suppliers.

Andraž Tuš, head of Tuš group, on behalf of the sellers, Tuš Holding and AH Invest 1, stated that they chose the buyer they believe is the best choice for their employees, business partners, and the company’s core business development. This acquisition reinforces Mercator’s position as a dominant player in the regional retail network.
