Mercator-S Becomes Serbia’s First “Green” Retail Chain

Mercator-S has become Serbia’s first "green" retail chain by exclusively using renewable energy, marking a major step towards sustainability

In a pioneering move towards sustainability and environmental protection, Mercator-S has become Serbia’s first “green” retail chain by switching to electricity supplied entirely from renewable sources by Elektroprivreda Srbije.

This eco-friendly initiative will significantly benefit the environment, with IDEA, Roda, and Mercator stores across Serbia expected to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 33% in 2024 and by 50% in 2025.

Mercator-S’s transition to renewable energy forms part of the Fortenova Group’s ESG strategy aimed at creating a sustainable future. Since 2021, the company has installed smart recycling presses for cans in 10 selected IDEA and Roda stores, resulting in the recycling of nearly 50,000 cans to date.

In addition to recycling, Mercator-S has also launched a composting project to reduce landfill waste. A pilot program in 16 selected IDEA stores has successfully composted over 35 tons of organic waste in one year, producing 6 tons of compost.
