The accolade, bestowed by the European Network of Wine Cities, Recevin, recognises destinations that have seamlessly combined viticulture with tourism, as reported by the Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FTC BiH).
“After receiving this award in Portugal last year, we pass it on, like in a rugby match, to Mostar this year. I’d like to note that cities have been the forerunners of the European Union, and since the Middle Ages, have maintained connections fostering the European spirit of collaboration. Today, we celebrate wine at this event, as wine unites people regardless of nationality,” commented Jean-Luc Moudenc, Mayor of Toulouse.
FTC BiH highlighted that this title is the latest in a series of accolades that Herzegovinian winemakers and the Herzegovina wine region have secured recently. These include the membership of Herzegovina’s Wine Route in the Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, Iter Vitis, awards like “Best Iter Vitis Wine City” for Mostar, “Best Sustainable Destination for Wine Tourism” for Trebinje, “Best Practice in Advancing Cultural-Historical Heritage and Wine” for the Tvrdoš Monastery, and a notable 39 medals for Herzegovinian wines at the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s most prestigious wine competition.
“This is an extraordinary acknowledgment for our city and all wine enthusiasts in our region. The 2024 Recevin Dionysius Wine City represents a fantastic opportunity to showcase Herzegovina’s Wine Route and its winemakers, spurring tourism and economic growth in our city. It’s a chance for us to collectively highlight what Mostar and Herzegovina have to offer the world,” Kordić remarked.
The Herzegovina Wine Route is overseen by FTC BiH in collaboration with Ljubuški, Čitluk, Mostar, Čapljina, Stolac, and Trebinje, supported by the USAID project for sustainable tourism development in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
