The decision for Džaferi’s appointment was made by the Central Presidency of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) on December 8th in Tetovo.
In a strategic move by the party, the current Finance Minister, Fatmir Besimi, has been designated as the head of the election campaign for the 2024 elections.
DUI spokesperson Bujar Osmani announced that party leader Ali Ahmeti has been authorized to continue discussions with other political parties to decide on potential coalitions for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
This arrangement, which includes an ethnic Albanian from the DUI serving as Prime Minister 100 days before elections, was part of an agreement reached by Ali Ahmeti and the former leader of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), Zoran Zaev. This accord was established alongside their coalition agreement following the 2020 parliamentary elections.
Dimitar Kovačevski, Zaev’s successor as the party leader, has repeatedly indicated his commitment to honoring this agreement.
According to the party leadership’s decision made on December 4th, the parliamentary elections next year are set for May 8th. This date will also see the second round of the presidential elections, following the first round on April 24th.
Therefore, Džaferi’s interim government is expected to take office on January 28th, with the elections being officially announced on February 28th.
