Montenegro Joins SEPA for Faster, Cheaper European Transfers

A game-changing move for Montenegro, as the country joins the SEPA payment system, bringing quicker, cheaper, and safer cross-border transfers within the EU and beyond

Montenegro is poised to make a monumental stride in its economic integration with the European Union.

As of October 5, 2025, the country’s banks will officially connect to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), enabling citizens and businesses to make faster, cheaper transactions within the EU.

This transition, announced by the European Payments Council (EPC), will see a significant upgrade in Montenegro’s payment infrastructure, aligning it with European standards.

The new system promises instant payments within seconds, operating 24/7/365, and without the usual extra fees associated with international transfers.

Beyond speed and affordability, this change will bring heightened security measures, such as stringent IBAN and name verification for transactions.

This move not only reduces operational costs but also strengthens Montenegro’s financial ties with Europe, fostering greater economic competitiveness and integration.

The shift will begin with preparations in April 2025, ensuring a smooth transition by the October deadline.
