Croatian Herbal Teas From Podravina Brew Success on Global Markets

From Japan to the USA, Croatia’s herbal tea producers are expanding exports with high‑quality blends rooted in local tradition.

In the fertile Podravina region of northern Croatia, the cultivation and processing of medicinal herbs have blossomed into a thriving export industry. At a large facility in Pitomača, producers are transforming nearly 200 varieties of plants into herbal teas, with annual production reaching some 60 million tea bags — the majority destined for overseas markets including Japan, the United States, Europe, Africa and beyond. Export growth has been driven in large part by the region’s chamomile, which accounts for more than half of total output and is prized by international buyers for its rich essential oils and consistent quality.

Long‑standing relationships with foreign partners have helped Croatian tea brands sustain global demand, with some buyers importing products for over 20 years. Quality control begins on the farm and continues through careful drying and processing, ensuring that Podravina teas meet stringent standards sought by overseas markets. Meanwhile, local initiatives such as the “House of Tea – Oasis of Peace” in Špišić Bukovica offer visitors insight into tea production, preparation and wellness benefits, highlighting the cultural value of Croatia’s herbal traditions even as the products reach shelves around the world.
