Bosnia and Herzegovina Moves Towards Dual Citizenship Agreement with Germany

Bosnia and Herzegovina's parliament has initiated steps towards a dual citizenship agreement with Germany, following the adoption of a proposal that could benefit thousands of BiH citizens living in Germany

The House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina has today adopted a significant initiative aimed at facilitating dual citizenship procedures between Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Germany. Spearheaded by Denis Zvizdić, the initiative calls on the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina to commence negotiations for an Agreement on Dual Citizenship with the Federal Republic of Germany.

The move comes in response to Germany’s new Citizenship Law, which now permits the acquisition of a German passport while retaining dual citizenship. Zvizdić welcomed the adoption of the initiative, highlighting its importance for the Bosnian diaspora and citizens, enabling tens of thousands to either return to Bosnia and Herzegovina or retain their BiH citizenship while acquiring German nationality.

With this development, Bosnia and Herzegovina is set to strengthen its ties with Germany, offering greater flexibility and security for its citizens residing in Germany, as well as those who wish to maintain a connection with their homeland. The next steps will involve the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina formally initiating the agreement process with German authorities.
