EU Moves to Begin Drafting Montenegro’s Accession Treaty

The step signals growing momentum in the country’s bid to become the next member of the bloc.

The European Union has initiated preparations to begin drafting the accession treaty for Montenegro, marking a significant advance in its enlargement process. The move reflects confidence in Montenegro’s reform progress and its position as the most advanced EU candidate in the Western Balkans.

Drafting an accession treaty represents a crucial phase in the membership process, typically coming once negotiations across key policy areas near completion.

It outlines the legal and institutional framework under which a candidate country joins the EU, including transitional arrangements and final commitments.

While challenges remain, particularly in areas such as rule of law and governance reforms, the development suggests that Montenegro’s path toward membership is entering a more concrete and technical stage. If progress continues, the country could move closer to finalising its accession timeline in the coming years.
