Keir Starmer Steps Down as UK Prime Minister

The UK Prime Minister will step down after less than two years in office, following mounting pressure within the Labour Party and declining public support

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, bringing an abrupt end to a premiership that began with Labour’s landslide election victory in 2024. Starmer said he would remain in office until a successor is chosen, with the leadership transition expected to be completed before Parliament returns after the summer recess.

The decision follows months of growing dissatisfaction within the governing Labour Party, a series of disappointing election results and a sharp decline in public approval ratings.

Starmer’s leadership had come under increasing scrutiny as Labour struggled to maintain momentum amid economic pressures, immigration debates and the rise of Reform UK under Nigel Farage.

Attention is now turning to Andy Burnham, who is widely regarded as the favourite to succeed Starmer. Burnham’s emergence signals a potential shift in Labour’s political direction at a time when the United Kingdom faces both domestic economic challenges and an increasingly complex international environment. Markets reacted calmly to the announcement, although investors will closely watch the priorities of the next government.
