Drivers in Croatia are set to see significant changes to the driving licence system as new European Union rules aim to improve road safety and modernise licensing across member states. The reforms will affect how licences are issued, used and recognised, bringing Croatia in line with updated EU standards.
One of the key changes is the introduction of a digital driving licence, which will be available on smartphones alongside the traditional physical card.
While drivers will still be able to carry a plastic licence, the digital version is expected to simplify checks, reduce fraud and make cross-border recognition easier within the EU.
The new rules also introduce a mandatory probation period of at least two years for new drivers, during which stricter penalties will apply for serious traffic offences. In addition, 17-year-olds will be allowed to drive, provided they are accompanied by an experienced driver until they turn 18, a measure aimed at improving young drivers’ skills and safety on the road.
