Medojević: Building Social Housing Should Be a Top Priority

The president of the Food Bank calls for state-funded rental apartments for citizens who cannot afford market prices.

Marina Medojević is the president of the Food Bank Montenegro, a non-governmental organization focused on reducing food waste and providing assistance to vulnerable social groups. In her opinion, building apartments for sale under favorable conditions is important, but constructing social housing for use is an even greater priority. She emphasized that high rents are a serious problem for tenants across social groups, and that even families with two average salaries often cannot afford to buy a home.

Medojević noted that EU countries support citizens in acquiring housing through various models — subsidies, guarantees, or tax relief — while socially responsible states also provide free or subsidized social housing for the most vulnerable.

Such apartments, she said, remain state or municipal property and are available only during the period of social need.

She added that ownership transfers are possible only for cooperative housing or under special conditions through the housing fund. Medojević also urged authorities to resolve criminal cases concerning irregularities in the allocation of social housing, stressing that fairness toward affected citizens must be restored.
